Knowledge Area Study Guides

The study guides under this section are useful as quick reference sheets (although they are getting fairly long). Each guide has a similar structure. It begins with a listing of reference material to study. Then it gives a bit more detail on specific things to study. Then key definitions are given followed by a brief description of the knowledge area processes and concepts. Lastly, sample question and answers are given including the answers.
- Integration Management
  The project integration management knowledge area includes processes that are required to ensure all the project's components are coordinated. This knowledge area includes the project plan development processes, project plan execution processes, and integrated change control processes. Each process has a set of input and a set of output. Each process also has a set of tools and techniques that are used to turn the input into output.
- Scope Management
  The project scope management knowledge area is defined by the processes that limit and control the work included in a project. These processes ensure that all the work of the project is included. Processes in this knowledge area include the initiation process as well as all the processes related to the scoping of the project. Each process has a set of input and a set of output. Each process also has a set of tools and techniques used to convert input into output.
- Time Management
  Project Time Management is a subset of project management that includes the processes required to ensure timely completion of the project. It includes processes such as the activity definition and sequencing processes. Each process has a set of input and a set of output. - Cost Management
  The project cost management knowledge area includes processes to ensure that a project is completed on time and within budget. These processes include resource planning and cost budgeting. - Quality Management
  The project quality management knowledge area is comprised of the set of processes that ensure the result of a project meets the needs for which the project was executed. - Human Resources Management
  People are a major part of any project. There are several different people required and at various times. All the people have to be used effectively in order for the project to succeed. - Communications Management
  There is a substantial amount of communications that must occur in any project. Information must be generated in a timely manner. - Risk Management
  Risk management must be an integral part of any project. Everything does not always happen as planned.   The project procurement management knowledge area includes processes that are used to manage what to procure and when to procure it.

Body Of Knowledge

The project management body of knowledge is categorized into various areas by the Project Management Institute. Below is a general "structure" for the guide published by the PMI. There was an edition published in 1996. This website was created on knowledge available at that time. The most recent edition of the guide was published in 2000. Updates to this site are being created as time permits and will be published as soon as available.
